At the invitation of BredaPhoto, FOTODOK is bringing the group exhibition A Spell Bundle – Manifesting Queer Futurity to Clublokaal as part of the festival. The exhibition is curated by Daria Tuminas and explores the idea of queer futurity: the tangible possibility of imagining and shaping a more just, inclusive and joyful world. It draws inspiration from José Esteban Muñoz’s influential publicatie Cruising Utopia: The Then and There of Queer Futurity (2009). At a time of increasing fascist and anti-queer rhetoric, imagination becomes an essential act of resistance and world-building.
A Spell Bundle – Manifesting Queer Futurity brings together work by five artists: Donja Nasseri, Ebun Sodipo, Julius Thissen, Nayara Leite and S*an D. Henry-Smith. By interweaving personal narratives, political discourse and archival research, they pay tribute to queer ancestors. Looking towards the future through the lens of the past, queerness thus becomes a means of bringing about change.
Together, the artists’ works conjure a spell that reveals and safeguards an alternative future. This takes the form of material, emotional and political strategies for survival in hostile worlds, whilst preserving tenderness, intimacy and queer possibilities. The artists create various forms of shelter against erasure and violence. Amidst collapsing realities, their works offer a beacon of hope: a tender manifesto of resistance and shared humanity.
